Santa Monica gallery Axiom Contemporary featured a new collection of work at SCOPE during Art Basel week in Miami December 3-8.
This series, entitled “Flight of Fancy,” was born from a need for lightness and brightness in our current gloomy landscape. These exotic birds, made completely of vintage magazine advertisements from the 1950s, are filled with imagery and text from a throwback era of innocence and optimism, consumerism and Americana. The inherent colors and textures of the birds allow the artist to layer the clearly manufactured utopian palette of crumbling old paper to create portraits of some of natures’ most fantastical creatures, shiny, bright and new.
